With Christmas I received this photograph of the mariage of my grandmother and grandfather in 1929. I like these photographs since they are sometimes more futuristic then one expects. The end of December is always quiet, since deadlines still can be ma...

Simultaneous analysis of aconitine, mesaconitine, hypaconitine, and jesaconitine in whole blood by LC-MS-MS using a new polymer column

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Abstract  A detailed procedure has been established for simultaneous analysis of aconitine, mesaconitine, hypaconitine, and jesaconitine
in whole blood using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The method uses a new unique polymer column
(Shodex ODP2 HP-4B) for separation, which enabled the injection of relatively crude organic extracts without complicated pretreatments.
Quantitation was made by mass chromatography with each product ion referenced against dextromethorphan as internal standard.
Aconitine and its three analogues showed good linearity over the range of 1.25–40 ng/ml; the detection limits were 0.3–0.5
ng/ml. Validation data including accuracy, precision, and recovery rates are presented. To further validate the present method,
the mix...

Complex suicide versus complicated suicide.

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Authors: Törő K, Pollak S
In complex suicides, two or more methods are applied either simultaneously or one after the other. The purpose of the present study was to distinguish such complex suicides in the proper sense from "complicated suicides", which are characterized by an unintentional secondary traumatization following the original suicide method. The study material comprises 1217 suicides investigated at the Budapest Institute of Forensic Medicine in the period from 2004 to 2006. Among these, 4.43% (n=54) accounted for planned or unplanned complex suicides, whereas 0.49% (n=6) were categorized as "complicated suicides". The latter group included four fatalities due to unintended falls from a height (for instance after breaking of the hanging noose), one death from ele...

The fatal injuries of car drivers.

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Authors: Ndiaye A, Chambost M, Chiron M
We often refer to road fatalities without knowing exactly what injuries are responsible for them. Based on the Rhône Road Trauma Registry this paper sets out to describe the topography, nature and frequency of the fatal injuries sustained by car drivers. Mean annual mortality at the wheel of a car, computed by dividing the total number of drivers killed (n=383) by the population of the Rhône Département (1.6 million) during the period 1996-2004 was 5.41 males per 100,000 and 1.41 females per 100,000, with 78% of the casualties residing in the Département. A reduction has been observed since 2003. Three-quarters of the casualties died at the scene of the crash. The results confirm the effectiveness of seat belts. The observed l...

Sudden unexpected death in a female fitness athlete, with a possible connection to the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) and ephedrine.
Forensic Sci Int. 2008 Dec 23;
Authors: Thiblin I, Mobini-Far H, Frisk M
The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been associated with different adverse effects, some of which potentially lethal. Most users of AAS are male, but the prevalence of such use appears to be increasing in females. Here we present a sudden unexpected death in a female fitness athlete with a possible connection to use of doping agents.

Authors: Szynkowska MI, Czerski K, Rogowski J, Paryjczak T, Parczewski A
Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry was applied in forensic research for characterization, visualization and analysis of fingerprints left after the fingers were contaminated by traces of drugs: amphetamine (AF), methamphetamine (MA) and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; ecstasy). Experimental work was carried out using four kinds of bases (steel, aluminium, brass and glass) on which fingerprints were imprinted. The results of our preliminary studies have demonstrated that the ToF-SIMS technique can be a powerful tool in chemical investigations of fingerp...

Rapid analysis of methamphetamine in hair by micropulverized extraction and microchip-based competitive elisa.

Rapid analysis of methamphetamine in hair by micropulverized extraction and microchip-based competitive ELISA.

Authors: Miyaguchi H, Takahashi H, Ohashi T, Mawatari K, Iwata YT, Inoue H, Kitamori T
An automated full-range quantitation method for identifying d-methamphetamine in human hair using a microchip-based ELISA system (microELISA) in combination with a micropulverized extraction method for sample preparation has been developed. An antibody and a peroxidase-linked methamphetamine, both are commercially available, were used for the competitive ELISA assay. Method validation was carried out using doped hair samples, and segmental analyses of real-case specimens were carried out by both microELISA and LC/MS/MS to verify the reliability and appl...
