Footprints in the snow

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

A computer intrusion takes approximately 60 seconds (usually far less) from initial entry to setting up a back door with administrative access. If not detected within the golden hour, it tends to be about a month or more before someone notices they've ...

A simple method for detecting fenitrothion, its metabolite 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol, and other organophosphorus pesticides in human urine by LC-MS

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Abstract  A simple liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method was developed and carefully validated for quantitation of
fenitrothion, its metabolite 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol, and five other organophosphorus pesticides (acephate, cyanophos, methidathion,
ethyl p-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate, and malathion) in human urine samples. Following deproteinization by acetonitrile, the
extracts were injected into an LC system and quantitated by MS in the negative ionization mode. The limits of detection were
in the range of 0.25–0.75 μg/ml for each analyte, and the method was validated on its accuracy and precision over the concentration
range of 1–15 μg/ml. The method was successfully applied to an actual poisoning case and should prove useful in clinical and
f...

A quick analysis helper

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I commonly analyze systems that run Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. A common question we have to answer is regarding the last date a scan was run and the date of the definition files. I did some quick research and came up with the following. M...

The witness, the perpetrator and the victim Part I

Monday, December 29th, 2008

When we investigate a system compromise we are often left with only one portion of the cause->effect equation. It's up to us to take what we are presented with, and reconstruct a crime scene in order to determine what happened and often times determin...

Age determination from central incisors of fetuses and infants.

Monday, December 29th, 2008

In conclusion, the age of fetuses and infants can be assessed by the measurements of a single central incisor. According to this research, when estimating age during identification studies, forensic researchers must take into consideration the period of embryonic human growth and development.

Postmortem blood concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides.

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Authors: Park MJ, In SW, Lee SK, Choi WK, Park YS, Chung HS
Cases involving acute fatalities due to ingestion of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), such as chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion and parathion, are presented. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were used for the analysis of OPs in postmortem blood. After extraction with an Oasis HLBtrade mark cartridge, the eluent was evaporated to dryness under a nitrogen stream at 35 degrees C, reconstituted with ethanol, and then analyzed by GC/MS. Terbufos was used as an internal standard. Verification procedures, such as the limit of detection, limit of quantification, linearity of the calibration, precision and recovery were performed. Validation data were adequate for analyzing OPs in blood. C...

An unusual case of suicide by sharp force.

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Authors: Viel G, Cecchetto G, Montisci M
A 43-year-old woman was found dead inside the bathtub in a sitting position with a knife embedded in chest. Multiple sharp force wounds were present: 4 stab wounds in the sternal region, 2 cut wounds in the neck, several longitudinal and transverse cuts in the arms. Scene circumstances and autopsy findings pointed toward a suicidal etiology. The case presented some particular aspects that allowed us to identify the mechanism of production of the lethal thoracic wound and to partially reconstruct the time-sequence of injuries.

Les anciens et la vitesse

Monday, December 29th, 2008
